THE OBSESSION // MARTYN THOMPSON FOR STUDIO VAN DEN AKKER
While the fashion world might currently be laser-focused on the H&M x Balmain collection launching later this week, we are fixated on an entirely different collaboration–one that is certainly less hyped, but in our opinion, far more steeped with design genius and originality. (Bonus: You won’t have to stand in line for hours or fend off crazed fashionistas in order to buy it.)
The collaboration is an exclusive partnership between furniture design duo Rob Copley and Sean Robins, owners of the showroom Studio Van Den Akker, and notable editorial photographer Martyn Thompson, who has shot imagery for among others, a holy trinity of heavyweights including Hermès, Architectural Digest, and Vogue.
For the showroom, Thompson–who has expanded the scope of his New York City studio in recent years to include work in publishing, textile and mural design–was tapped to create an original, abstract line of fabrics, which he dubbed “The Accidental Expressionist." The prints feature paint blots from Thompson's past projects, which were then photographed and translated for fabric. He describes the inspiration behind the collection as “The incidental marks of the artist; paint splatters, stains and specks, which are elevated and transformed into woven fabrics that speak to the beauty of unconscious creation.”
The individual markings may be incidental, but the finished textiles are, by design, beautiful enough to double as wall coverings or framed artwork.
