THE OBSESSION // SABINE MARCELIS

June 17, 2016

New Zealand-based product and interior designer Sabine Marcelis first popped up on our radar in 2012, when she was still just a student at Design Academy Eindhoven. She'd created what was one of the greatest fusions between form and function (and also fun) that we'd ever seen: an art museum-worthy way to make wine at home. She punnily (yes, punnily) called it "House Wine."

She's pretty much had our hearts since then. In 2013, she debuted a beautiful, thoughtful, and cheeky collection of colored ombre mirrors during Dutch Design Week, called "Seeing Glass" along with fellow Design Academy Eindhoven grad Brit van Nerven.  The series, created for the exhibition's "Objects to Play" event, was inspired by the idea that anyone looking at their works would see themselves in a slightly warped, brightly colored version of the world. In other words, real-life Instagram filters that happen to be chic decor, too. Brilliant.

Over the last three years, she has headlined solo exhibitions, and garnered a client roster that includes Isabel Marant, Miya Kondo for Stella McCartney, and Rabobank. Oh, and Celine. (Say hi to Phoebe for us!).

Like a wine you make yourself in a chic art piece, Marcelis is only getting better with age. Her latest projects include the Voie Lights series, a study in light paths made all the more striking by her choice of materials: Neon and a cast poly-resin which diffuses the light at the base of the sculpture, giving each piece a 24-hour sunset effect.

Also: This clock ("The Incalescene Clock"). It appears to be solid black, but tiny white areas appear, rotating around the clock to tell the time. It's basically magical, which leads us to conclude that Sabine Marcellis is really an insanely talented unicorn.
