There is a lot we love about the upcoming Latex Ball. First and foremost, the event, which takes place each summer in New York City is designed to raise awareness for its sponsor, Gay Men's Health Crisis. GMHC was started more than 25 years ago in the wake of the AIDS crisis and has been a driving force in AIDS and HIV research for that past two decades.
Besides the fact that the event is in the name of a wonderful cause, it is also arguably the most unique, fun, and fabulous event of the year. The night is one non-stop dance party. Literally, it starts at 8 p.m. and ends at 4 a.m.
And, as you may have guessed by the photo above, this ain't your momma's ball. To the uninitiated: Ball culture is one of the most famed subcultures in the LGBT community, uniting different "houses," which compete against on another in events like runway, fashion, and vogue-ing. Yes, this is a real thing.
To paint a more vivid picture, this year, prizes will be given out categories like:
Fem Queen Performance- in a Legendary Cat Suit
Drags Performance- Covered in Gems
Women’s Vogue- Warrior Effect
Butch Queen Performance- Glitz and Glitter
Pop, Dip and Spin- Tracksuit
Twist- In a Cunty Effect
