THE TALENT // BIG (BJARKE INGELS GROUP)
We love big ideas, including pretty much every single idea from BIG, or Bjarke Ingels Group, a Copenhagen and New York-based architecture and design firm known for boundary-pushing design with purpose. While the firm has twelve partners and a wide range of specialties (including architecture, urbanism, interior design, landscape design, product design, research and development), the soul of the firm is principal, founder, and all around design genius Bjarke Ingels.
Among Ingels's inferiority complex-spurning awards and achievements: he's been named Wall Street Journal's Innovator of the Year and one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by TIME Magazine, he's taught classes at Harvard, Yale, and Columbia, and he won the Danish Crown Prince’s Culture Prize in 2011. To name a few.
While his credentials are truly impressive, his work speaks for itself. It's unlike anything else in the world, and--we're calling it now--he's destined to join the ranks of greats like Peter Marino, Mies Van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier. A few of his most impressive projects:
The Isenberg School of Business Innovation Hub, Amherst, Massachusetts (Under Construction) Locals, rejoice! BIG is currently erecting a modern-masterpiece on the campus of UMass Amherst.
The Kistefos Museum, Scandinavia (Under Construction) Form meets function here: This museum doubles as a bridge over a river.
Vm Houses, Copenhagen (Completed) These residential buildings, designed to look like a V and an M from Google Earth, won a 2007 Mies Van der Rohe Award Honorable Mention.
Big Pin Phoenix Observation Tower, Phoenix, AZ (Idea)
While tower in the midst of the desert never came to fruition, the building is genius, taking inspiration from, of all places, the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Pretty BIG deal, huh?
